How Air Conditioning Works

Cooling, Heating and Control

Modern air-conditioning systems can provide highly efficient cooling and heating from one discreet system. Scroll to follow the cycle.

1. Warm air is drawn in

The indoor unit quietly draws warm room air across a heat-exchange coil.

2. Heat transfers to the refrigerant

Heat passes into the refrigerant circuit, a sealed loop connecting the indoor and outdoor units.

3. Heat is released outside

The outdoor condenser rejects the collected heat to the outside air.

4. Cooled air circulates

Cooled, filtered air returns to the room in a gentle, draught-free pattern.

5. The cycle reverses for heating

In winter the cycle runs in reverse, drawing heat from the outside air to warm the room with remarkable efficiency.

Comfort, Delivered

“You would never know the system was there until you feel it. The bedroom is finally usable in a heatwave, and the installation was immaculate: floors covered, everything hoovered, not a mark left.”
Homeowner · Guildford, Surrey
“The survey was the difference. They planned the pipe runs so nothing is visible anywhere in the house. It looks like the units were part of the original architecture.”
Whole-home system · St Albans, Hertfordshire
“Our glazed extension was unusable from May to September. Now it is the coolest room in the house and you cannot see a single piece of equipment.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Considered answers

Yes. Modern inverter systems are designed for exactly the conditions UK homes now experience: increasingly warm summers, highly glazed extensions and well-insulated rooms that hold heat. The same system also provides highly efficient heating in winter.

Yes. Almost every system we install is a heat pump, providing efficient heating as well as cooling from one discreet unit, often at a lower running cost than conventional electric heating.

Very quiet. Premium indoor units operate from around 19–26 dB(A) on low settings, quieter than a whisper. We select low-noise outdoor units and position them carefully to protect both your rooms and your neighbours.

Most domestic installations fall under permitted development, subject to conditions on the position and size of the outdoor unit. Listed buildings and some flats need consent. We advise on this during the survey.

Typically at ground level on a discreet base, on a flat roof, or wall-mounted on brackets. We choose a location that balances performance, noise, access for servicing and the appearance of the property.

Yes. Wherever possible we route pipework internally, within voids or neatly boxed, and use colour-matched trunking externally. Concealment is planned at the design stage, not improvised on the day.

A single-room system is usually installed in one day. Multi-room systems typically take two to three days depending on pipe routes and the number of indoor units.

An annual service keeps the system efficient, hygienic and within manufacturer warranty terms. We offer straightforward servicing plans for both homes and businesses.

Yes. A multi-split system connects several indoor units to a single outdoor condenser, with independent control in each room. This is ideal where outside space is limited.

Modern inverter systems are highly efficient: for every kilowatt of electricity consumed they typically deliver three to five kilowatts of cooling or heating. Running costs for a bedroom system are usually pence per hour.

Bedrooms are one of our most requested installations. We specify low-noise units with night modes and position them for gentle, draught-free airflow over the sleeping area.

Yes. We design and install systems for offices, retail, restaurants, studios and other commercial environments, including ceiling cassettes, concealed ducted systems and multi-split installations.
